Doxie Flip Scanner Review

The Doxie Flip is a compact flatbed scanner for absolute portability as it runs on batteries. Unlike many of the other compact portable scanners I have used in the past, this one doesn’t need you to move the scanner across the document that you would like to scan. The Doxie Flip was developed to be a traditional flatbed scanner but taking up much smaller desk space.

The Doxie Flip is the Doxie line’s latest product, coming after the amazing Doxie Q, the Doxie One and the Doxie Go. The Doxie Flip improves on earlier models by letting any material that does not fit in the scanning space on the Doxie to be scanned, although sizeable books will still not be scanned properly because the scanning area is not much. This makes it the ideal choice for photo scanning and old document scanning.

The Doxie Flip showcases a fully removable lid which makes scanning anything you want easier. The transparent scanning window enables you to see the scanning operation in real-time and enables the scanner to be placed directly on the book/document. The feature of AutoStitch makes it easy to merge several scans into a larger scan. There is a full-colour little display so that after the scan you can see the preview of the picture. It features an SD card reader so that you can use it to load images into your Mac or PC if they don’t have one.

Key features and benefits

  • The exclusive removable lid of this scanner lets you flip it over and place it directly on your source documents. Line up scans exactly, and you can see the scan as it has a transparent scanning window.
  • With Doxie’s included software, you can import scans straight to your PC or Mac that makes it easy to organise, sort, save, and share your scans.
  • It supports cloud sharing directly to Evernote, Dropbox and more. Also, the scans from Doxie can be dropped into Facebook for easy sharing with your friends and family.
  • It also uses an SD card reader for memory and they generously include a 4GB card and a USB SD card reader for those who don’t have the suitable memory card slot on their computers.
  • With the user-friendly interface for this scanner, you may use the 5 control buttons to set the time, date, adjust the DPI level from 300 to 600, and set auto shutdown time. Simply place the item you want to scan on the scanning surface to scan and press the big green button on the side.

With this mobile flatbed scanner, images can be digitised to a resolution of up to 600 dpi. Such numbers mean that you will obtain clear and accurate scans in high quality, decent enough not only for posting to the Web but also for printing. And the quality of that printed image is going to be top-notch.

The standard resolution scanning speed (300 dpi) is 7 seconds, and the batteries hold the charge long enough that you can create about 200 copies. If you believe that you need a higher resolution and raise it to 600 dpi, it requires 15-20 seconds for the scanning. The document getting digitised is saved in JPEG, PDF, or PNG, based on the data type it contains.

The scanning software of Doxie functions very well. A lot of options are available, such as image correction, rotation, and cropping. That’s also where you can choose which photos you need to stitch together. You can also select a set of pictures to ‘Staple’ together and then save the collection as a pdf. The photos will be deleted from the SD card as you import the pictures into the software. You may find it useful or irritating so be conscious of that, either way.

The Doxie flip scanner comes with two scanning resolutions, 300 DPI and 600 DPI. Given the limited scanning space neither the 300 DPI nor the 600 DPI scan will take longer than 30 seconds. It won’t take the 300 DPI scans as long as the 600 DPI scans. For basic archiving objectives, the picture quality is reasonable but will not be enough for an expert. People report comfort with the scans but there is a distinct difference in the quality as compared to the high powered models.

If you need to scan anything larger than 4×6″, the software has an Auto-Stitch feature that will take care of it. You can simply scan a series of photos and click stitch when you import them to your PC! They will be stitched into one big smooth photo.

Stitching together photos is of course not groundbreaking, but using the Doxie Flip and AutoStitch feature is so easy and it operates quite well. That opens up all kinds of scanning possibilities for items.

Pros

  • The Doxie flip scanner is lightweight and about the size of a book so it fits in a bag comfortably.
  • The product works perfectly fine with XP and higher versions of Windows, and 10.7 and higher versions of Mac.
  • You may directly pull the photos off the card and edit them in your favourite photo editor if required.
  • Even if the display is pretty tiny, it works well enough in verifying all the things before going on to scan.
  • The dimensions are 10.23 x 6.46 x 1.34 “which makes it easy to fit into a backpack or briefcase. It’s powered by 4 AA batteries (included), so there’s no worrying about cables.

Cons

  • For general online backup purposes, the image quality is acceptable but will not be enough for a professional.
  • Because of the limited scanning space on the Doxie Flip, it’s not feasible for scanning large books or documents.

A coloured LED display and 5 navigation buttons are intuitively placed to the front of this wireless flatbed scanner. The buttons are designed to change the scanner configuration, set the date and time, and modify the time of turn-off. You will see the battery life indicator in the top portion of the window, on the status bar, and also the number of copies remaining. It also fits snugly in this Doxie Flip carry case.

The On/Off button, the memory card slot, and the Scan button are located on the side panel. Such button positioning is handy while flipping the reflective scanner to scan. You’ll need the Doxie program to modify pictures on your computer.

This compact scanner allows quick scanning of photographs and uploading of the scanned recreations directly to the online storage. The AutoStitch feature identifies multiple overlapping images and then stitches them together, making one big unified photo. Therefore, the tiny size of this stunning mobile flatbed scanner won’t prevent you from scanning large photos. And the Intelligent Auto Adjust feature automatically acknowledges the contents of the document and crops it to the size required.

Software

The Doxie Flip scanner offers the opportunity to use the provided software to import scans into your PC or Mac. The software is designed to make the organisation and filtering of your photographs simpler. Simple image editing tools are not included in the package therefore editing with another application will need to be performed.

Cloud storage apps make it easy to save or even upload the photos on Facebook, Dropbox and Evernote. If you’re prepared to buy a separate card reader for the iPad, you can also sync up your images to that device. Photos can be saved either as JPEG (regular) formats or as PNG formats.

The Doxie Flip arrives with the manufacturer’s one-year limited warranty, from the purchase date. If during that period you encounter a problem and have done nothing to void the warranty they will fix or replace the device. Customer services are available via emails and online. There doesn’t seem to be a way to get in touch with support via phone.

Using Your Flatbed Scanner

The flatbed scanners are mostly multifunctional tools. But some models do have specific features. And they may be of varying size. Determine which documents you want to create digital duplicates of and choose the type of scanner after that. Most commonly people have to scan documents and photographs and a handheld flatbed scanner is ideal for this purpose as you only put the photo on the glass panel under which a scanning array passes, and the scanner will do the rest. Such models are easy enough to find, inexpensive, and easy to use. Their only drawback is typically a large size.

There are reflective scanners that are called portable, that can be used anywhere. They are also small and compact, enabling you to scan 4″x 6″ images, yet at the same time, the software of these portable flatbed scanners can stitch a few scanned images together.

I would suggest that you make a decision on the weight you need before making the final decision, as you wouldn’t like dragging a big machine along. Often useful is the number of connectivity options and the wireless feature makes it much easier to position the scanner wherever you feel comfortable. Also, if you’re looking for a mobile flatbed photo scanner model, be sure to check the time it’s running on a battery.

The Doxie Flip is an excellent scanner to have and own. It is straightforward to use, lightweight and effective. It is also perfect for portable flatbed scanning where a larger device is unfeasible and resorting to a camera app on the phone is not strong enough for tidy, high-resolution scans.
